In season two, episode nine of The CW's Supergirl, Kara Danvers and Mon-El's search for a missing person leads them on an adventure to a different planet, where Kara encounters a familiar enemy.
The midseason premiere of Supergirl begins with Kara Danvers chasing bad guys as Supergirl, and causing their van to crash. Two of the villains run away, James as Guardian defeats both of them, saving Winn’s life in the process. When Kara talks to Alex about her latest fight, she seems annoyed with Guardian, still not knowing he is actually James, and feels let down by her recent fights. Alex reminds her there is nothing wrong with an easy fight, and she is still a hero even if she is saving items and not people. Alex has plans with Maggie later that night, and is visibly excited. Maggie ends up staying the night and borrowing Alex’s shirt, both of which make Alex incredibly happy.
Snapper Carr, Kara's boss, is annoyed as usual when Kara ambushes him with a story in the morning. James and Kara argue about the importance of Guardian in the fight the night before, further annoying Carr. Then a woman arrives and asks for help them finding her daughter, Izzy, played by director Kevin Smith’s daughter, Harley Quinn Smith. Kara tells the woman they will help her, but Carr disagrees.
Maggie and Kara meet at the alien bar and she gives her the report on Izzy and tells her there have been a lot of missing person cases recently. While there, Kara discovers Mon-El got a job as a bartender. They chat for a minute and Kara discovers Mon-El is not adept at his job yet, as he gives her something she did not order.
The scene switches to a young man being abducted by a doctor and his men, then Roulette appears.
Kara asks Winn for help on the missing person’s case, and he finds out the missing people had blood work done at the same place. She sees his bruised face from being attacked while helping Guardian. He lies and tells both Kara and Alex he was mugged. Alex is bouncy and can’t stop smiling and tells her sister that Maggie stayed the night.
Mon-El joins Kara on her case and they go to the doctor’s office where the missing people had their blood drawn for a clinical trial. The two are adorably charming as they come up with aliases while talking to the doctor. The doctor tries to abduct them, so they fight but the doctor leaves through a portal, so Kara follows, Mon-El joining a minute later. On the other side of the portal, she is attacked by aliens and finds she’s losing strength. The planet has a red sun, so she and Mon-El are powerless, and the portal turns off leaving them stranded.
James and Winn have a conversation about the fight. Winn is angry and scared about almost getting killed and does not want to help anymore. Alex cuts their talk short as she arrives asking about Kara because she has not heard from her. They arrive with other DEO agents at the doctor’s office, see the portal and realize Kara is gone.
Meanwhile Mon-El gets stuck in a trap and the two get captured by an alien. The alien tells them about a trafficking ring operating on the planet. They surrender themselves to get into the base and are placed in a large cell with other humans, including Izzy. She lets them know she lost her powers but will help. Roulette slinks in, telling Kara they need to “stop meeting like this,” alluding to the last time they saw each other when Kara was in her fighting cage.
The DEO find out where Kara is and that the planet has a red sun. Maggie shows up and Alex has a mini meltdown and tells Maggie to leave. Alex is worried about her sister, but is also blaming herself for being too happy. Winn is told he is going to the planet, and is anxious about the trip. He tells Alex about his near death experience, but Alex reminds him it’s ok to be scared.
On the planet, Roulette tells them about her human trafficking business and lets them know they’ve been sold. Kara and Mon-El discuss being a hero, and Kara once more proves how much of a hero she is by protecting the humans. The humans then help her defeat the aliens, then they imprison Roulette and the doctor.
Alex and the DEO agents arrive on the planet. Winn is left alone to fix the portal, telling himself over and over that he is “not a red shirt.” The DEO blasts into the base, while Kara and Mon-El are helping the humans escape. An alien tells another Mon-El cannot be harmed, and bows. This leads one to wonder if he is actually the prince of Daxam, or if he is working with the aliens. Either way, it allows the group to make an escape and meet with the DEO. Winn fixed the portal, and fought with an alien and defeated them, gaining some confidence. Everyone begins to leave, but Izzy is captured by alien, so Kara runs to help, aided by a device that gives her back her powers. She saves Izzy and they all go home, where she destroys the portal.
Back home, Kara returns Izzy to her mom. She gives Carr her report, while letting him know when it comes to a story, she will always trust herself. Winn has gotten over his near death experience and tells James he still wants to help. Meanwhile, Alex apologies to Maggie and explains when she focuses on herself and not her responsibilities, something goes wrong. She tells Maggie she was worried about Supergirl, and Maggie lets her know she knows Kara is Supergirl, and the two make up.
Mon-El visits Kara and says he is inspired by her and wants to be a superhero. They banter and seem to have reached a new point in their friendship. The episode ends with aliens looking for Mon-El and then killing the doctor once he tells them Mon-El is on Earth.
Overall, it was a good episode. I want to know what is going on with Mon-El, and am excited to see where that storyline goes. I loved the scenes between the Danvers sisters. I feel like their relationship is one of the reasons the show works so well, and Melissa Benoist and Chyler Leigh have great chemistry. I really like Alex/Maggie and hope they stay together. Alex's coming out story was one of the best I have ever seen, and I want to see her in a long, loving relationship. I liked seeing Roulette again as Dichen Lachman always shines in any scene. Also Jeremy Jordan is always good at comedic relief as Winn, but he showed his serious side this week and it was fantastic.
