Ryan Lochte partners with PowerBar, looks for clean start

Olympic swimmer Ryan Lochte has a new sponsor and is looking for a fresh start in 2017.

According to USA Today, Lochte has formed a partnership with PowerBar, which is debuting a Clean Start Pledge and a new Clean Whey product line. He stars in PowerBar’s latest commercial and talks about using the company’s products as part of a clean start; saying he plans to recommit himself to pool sports.

“To have a big company like PowerBar (partner with me means a lot),” Lochte said. “As an Olympian, you want to surround yourself with the best brands out there.”

No one needs a clean start more than Lochte. The 12-time Olympic medalist caused controversy at the Rio Olympics last year with the infamous gas station incident. The tall tale cost Lochte to lose most of his sponsors.

“2016 is now in the past, and I’m putting that behind me,” he said. “I’m looking forward to having a clean start.”

The fresh start includes marrying former Playboy model Kayla Rae Reid, announcing that he will be a father and moving to Los Angeles.

Lochte said that he’s excited about becoming a dad and can’t wait for it to happen. The couple is expecting a boy in June and the athlete is moving to Los Angeles to train with three-time Olympic medalist Conor Dwyer to prepare for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo.

“Once we get settled into our new place, that’s when I’m going to start really training for 2020,” he said. “It should be fun.”
