'Celebgate' hacker to serve 9 months in jail

The man who hacked more than 300 iCloud and Gmail accounts in 2014, including Jennifer Lawrence and dozens more celebrity accounts, has been sentenced to nine months in prison.

The hacking, which was dubbed "Celebgate," started as a phishing scheme led by Edward J Majerczyk, 29. What led it to scandal is that Majerczyk managed to get a hold of hundreds of nude photos, which were then leaked online.

According to Chicago Sun Times, Majerczyk's emails appeared to be from the victims’ internet service providers’ security accounts. Once the victims clicked on the link, they landed on a site that collected their usernames and passwords.

Majerczyk targeted celebrities in the scam. Among those photos leaked were Jennifer Lawrence's pictures. The actress later spoke out about what she referred to as a "sex crime."

While the maximum sentence for this type of crime is five years, both sides agreed to a reduced sentence of nine months. In addition, Majerczyk was ordered to pay $5,700 in restitution to an unnamed celebrity who underwent counseling after the photos leaked.
