Atlanta Braves' Sean Rodriguez involved in deadly car crash

Atlanta Braves infielder Sean Rodriguez was involved in a deadly car crash on Sat., Jan. 28 in Miami.

Police were examining a large black bag that some diners had left at a restaurant when a man stole their cruiser. The man who stole the police cruiser crashed into two cars that were heading in opposite directions, one of which was Rodriguez and his family. The cruiser burst into flames, according to WSVN. The guy who stole the cruiser died in the crash.

“There was a report of a vehicle that was involved in an accident and had caught fire,” Miami-Dade police detective Dan Ferrin said. “Sometimes a minor call that they get, which is not an emergency, could turn out to be a lot bigger than what it is.”

The Braves infielder wasn’t hurt in the accident but his family was taken to the hospital. His wife is in fair condition and their two kids are in serious but stable condition.

Rodriguez, who played for the Pittsburgh Pirates the last two seasons, signed with the Braves last November. He hit .270 with 18 home-runs and 56 RBI’s, all career-highs, last year, according to ESPN. His .349 on-base percentage and .510 slugging percentage are also career-highs.

The Braves and the Pirates tweeted that Rodriguez and his family are in their thoughts.
