Wonder Woman fired by United Nations

Can you fire a superhero? The United Nations just did.

After only two months as an honorary ambassador for the United Nations, Wonder Woman is being fired. Yes, you read that right— a fake character is getting canned by the international organization that was founded on equal rights and universal peace.

Earlier this year, the UN once again elected a male candidate to fill the role as Secretary General of the UN. The appointment of Wonder Woman as the honorary ambassador for the empowerment of women and girls was their answer to gender equity. That apparent publicity stunt backfired.

Shortly after the appointment, female advocates, members of the public and UN workers rallied against the selection. A petition was started in which Wonder Woman was compared to the likes of a “pin-up” girl. That petition now has nearly 45,000 signatures and the UN is scrambling.

Wonder Woman is not the first fictitious character to be appointed by the UN. According to the New York Times, Winnie the Pooh and Tinker Bell both served similar ambassadorships in the past.

Yahoo News reports that Wonder Woman will be removed as an honorary ambassador as of Dec. 16.
