Stars like Blake Lively, Lupita Nyong'o, Zac Posen, Chelsea Clinton and Mindy Kaling are sharing their love of science with Google's new Made w/ Code initiative.
Made w/Code encourages young girls to develop a passion for coding. According to the Made w/ Code website, while 74 percent of girls express an interest in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) in middle school, by high school only 0.4 percent plan to study computer science when they go to college. The initiative already has partnerships with companies including iHeart Radio, American Girl, Girls who Code and Black Girls Code. The initiative intends to not only encourage passion for coding and computer science, but to also show the areas where coding skills can be applied, which includes fashion, medicine and entertainment.
"We started Made with Code because increasingly more aspects in our lives are powered by technology, yet women aren’t represented in the roles that make technology happen," the website said
E! News reports that Zac Posen and Lupita Nyong' are certainly doing their part to ensure that young girls know the power of code. Zac Posen designed Claire Danes' Met Gala dress using LED technology and Lupita Nyong'o's dress from the Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens was also made with code, specifically it was made by Made w/ Code mentor Maddy Maxey.
