Phil Chess
March 27, 1921 October 18, 2016
Phil Chess is a legend among rock, blues and jazz musicians. He emigrated from Poland with his family in 1928. In 1950, he and his brother formed Chess Records. He signed and promoted artists such as Bo Diddly, Etta James, Howlin’ Wolf and Ike Turner – at a time when most labels were turning away black musicians. Chess is often credited as having played a larger part in developing rock and roll as we know it today.
