‘Something In Between’ by Melissa de la Cruz book review

On Oct. 4, Harlequin Teen books released Melissa de la Cruz’s new contemporary novel for young adults, titled Something In Between. The novel tackles the tough subject of illegal immigration with tact and grace and leaves its readers wanting to make their mark on the world.

Jasmine is a Filipino immigrant who has grown up in the U.S. since elementary school. She works hard, striving to be the very best at everything she sets out to do. When she wins a presidential national merit scholarship, she’s thrilled to tell her parents the good news. However, what they tell her in return will break her heart. They’re in the country illegally and she can’t take the scholarship and may not even be able to go to college. The rest of the story is her journey in trying to salvage her life and find safety, as well as falling in love.

Jasmine is a dynamic character who readers can sympathize with. She’s hard-working and determined and just wants the right to follow her dreams. Will she be able to stay in the U.S. with her family? Is this the end of her love affair with a prominent conservative congressman’s son? The characters in this novel are well rounded and really come alive as the story moves on. Readers will be inspired to work diligently and make a difference in today’s crazy world.

While the novel tied up a little too neatly for my taste, overall it was a good story. If you enjoy contemporary YA or are interested in the topic of immigration, this is an ideal read. Pick it up at your favorite bookstore today.
