Singer/songwriter Devi Rosado released her five-track album, Heart Stone, this past May. The artist began creating music later in life – having already raised a family and pursued a business career. After teaching herself to play guitar, she began to write and record tracks in 2014. Though Devi's story is inspiring, the work on Heart Stone is hit or miss.
Heart Stone opens with “One More Day.” Though there is some interesting material in the song, it feels like a mark through rather than a final cut. The topic in this track appears to be quite personal. However, Devi’s vocal performance does not convey enough emotion to be attention grabbing. This, combined with obvious feeling lyrics, keeps audiences at a distance rather than drawing them in.
“Promises” is the second track on this album. Underlying instrumentation and vocal quality here inspire some interest – making it somewhat catchy. The chorus and percussion work outshine the verses though, which are a bit awkward. Once again, this is a good idea, but it needs some additional work to pull it together effectively.
An indecisive sense from Devi
The best-executed track on Heart Stone proves to be the title track. Stopping just short of feeling truly radio ready, the chorus is once more the best part in this song. Unfortunately, there is a moment that feels a bit too close to Pink’s “Just Give Me a Reason.” The result is listeners walking away with Pink’s song in their mind, rather than “Heart Stone.”
The remaining two tracks on Heart Stone prove to have solid instrumentation and arrangement. Overall, the performance remains distant and neither here nor there stylistically. Rather than coming across as a fusion sound, both “It’s Your Life” and “One And Only Love” ring of an indecisive personality.
Heart Stone falls somewhat flat. However, there are some good bones buried within it. Listeners hope that Devi will continue to develop herself as an artist and grow from here.
