Angela Lansbury, the original Mrs. Potts, shared her opinion about Disney's forthcoming live-action remake of Beauty and the Beast.
The five-time Tony Award-winner spoke with Entertainment Weekly after a special 25th anniversary screening of the animated film at the Film Society of Lincoln Center in September. Speaking on the new film, which stars Emma Watson as Belle, Lansbury said, "I thought, 'Why? Why are we doing this over again?'"
Although Lansbury is interested to see what Disney does with the film this go around, she did admit her confusion as to why it needs a remake. Who can blame her?
The 1991 film, which also included the voice acting talents of David Ogden Stiers and Jerry Orbach, was the first animated film to be nominated for the Oscar for "Best Picture." However, one bright spot for Ms. Lansbury is the fact that her friend Emma Thompson will be stepping up to fill her shoes as the new Mrs. Potts. We'll see how she does when the movie premieres next year.
In honor of the 25th anniversary of the film, Lansbury also reprised her role as Mrs. Potts to sing "Beauty and the Beast" at the screening in September. You can watch it below.
