‘The Vampire Diaries’ recap episode 801: ‘Hello, Brother’

This week on The Vampire Diaries, we find out more about the ancient creature that’s controlling Damon and Enzo.

A couple drives into a bank of fog. They swerve to miss someone in the road, only to hit someone else. It’s Damon and Enzo. This can’t be good.

The boys bring the couple to their warehouse and tell them they’re in charge of capturing the dregs of humanity. Damon deems the man’s life the worst and plans to kill him. Enzo feeds off the woman and takes her away. What are they doing with the bodies?

Damon admits the evil one is forcing him to kill. He hangs the man on a hook and drops him in a bloody tank of water. Something attacks and Damon pulls up an empty hook. He and Enzo then head off to sleep like nothing happened.

Bonnie writes in a journal for Elena. She and her friends have no idea where Enzo and Damon are or who took them. They’re having a hard time finding moments of normal to keep them sane.

Caroline has a hard time accepting Rick’s new hot nanny. Stefan suggests she’s jealous. Is she? She says she’s worried about him. He’s exploring the Armory every moment that he isn’t with the kids.

Stefan looks over the missing persons reports to see if he can find a pattern. Caroline gets a text that a body has been found. It’s a start to their investigation.

Two interns at the Armory figured out how the guys got out of the vault without anyone seeing. They cover Rick’s eyes and ears and tell him to feel his way out. He feels something strange and walks through the wall.

Enzo says he dumped the girl. What’s going on? Enzo asks if Damon has any control left and says he’s down to two percent. Damon says he flipped his humanity switch.

Bonnie doubts the body has anything to do with the guys. When she has hope, it gets crushed. Will it be the same this time? Stefan tells her not to give up.

Rick’s interns follow him through the wall. Their sense of touch has to be isolated to find the way. What’s down the tunnel?

Caroline receives a thumb drive at work featuring Enzo questioning Virginia. The sound guy has fixed it as much as he can, but it still squeals when Virginia speaks.

Rick follows the tunnel. He finds a door covered in rocks and pushes it open to find hidden treasures.

Stefan compels a detective at the scene of the murder. The victim is the woman Enzo supposedly let go. She’s been bitten and strangled with a guitar string.

Stefan calls Caroline who tells him that the town he’s in had a slaughterhouse with a drainage issue that caused the creek to run red with blood. It was closed down. It’s three miles from the crime scene, which is exactly what the woman’s odometer reads. Can they be that close to finding Damon and Enzo?

The nanny calls Caroline to say that Rick’s phone has been going to voicemail all afternoon. Caroline calls his office. The nanny hears the door open and assumes it’s Rick, but the office tells Caroline he’s still there. Who’s at the house? When the nanny returns to the kitchen, Virginia slits her throat from behind. Caroline runs to save her.

Virginia tries to find the twins. She hears them hiding in the closet, but Caroline catches her first and knocks her unconscious. She feeds her blood to the nanny who awakes.

Rick’s intern, Georgie, hits on him, but he shoots her down. Caroline calls with the emergency.

The detective finds candle wax at the scene. Stefan finds the bodies at the slaughterhouse. He stands on the grate above the pit. Damon appears. Can Stefan save him or is this more than he can handle?

Damon tells Stefan it doesn’t matter what has him. He’s done. He refuses to let Stefan help him flip his switch back on. He sees how it ends – with fire and brimstone. He tells Stefan to leave because the creature doesn’t want him yet. Stefan says he won’t leave without him.

Caroline compels the nanny to take the girls out for at least two hours. She’s tied Virginia to a chair and slaps her awake. Virginia says the creature has come for Caroline’s kids. She then spits out her own tongue before she can answer any questions.

Stefan stabs Damon, knocking him out cold. Bonnie says to load him in the car while she finds Enzo. When Stefan turns back, Damon is gone and Enzo attacks him from behind. Damon has Bonnie by the throat. How will this turn out?

Enzo tells Stefan to take Bonnie and leave. Do we see a glimmer of his true self? Damon says his life has been over since Stefan took it from him. Guilt flashes across Stefan’s face.

Rick wants to move into Caroline’s house to watch the kids. He says she should move in with Stefan.

Enzo left Bonnie the clues at the murder scene. He wants to be saved. She vows to Stefan that they’ll get them back. Stefan is losing hope. He thinks Damon will never forgive him. Is he giving up?

Bonnie flashes back to Enzo reading her The Odyssey. It mentions the wax and binding positions of the victim today. What’s he trying to tell her?

Damon finds an art show where the paintings were made with human blood. He compels the artist to explain himself and they take him from the show.

Damon tells Enzo he was surprised by the visit earlier. He warns Enzo that if the creature knows what he cares about, bad things will happen.

Stefan writes to Elena that he’s lost Damon, but still hopes there might be a sliver of humanity inside. Meanwhile, Damon is dreaming of Elena. Caroline tells Stefan she wants to move in. He kisses her and smiles.

Bonnie calls Rick about the clues. The book is about sirens. Rick says they use mind control and are said to be messengers of the Devil. Could this be the ancient evil?

At the slaughterhouse, a body climbs from the tank. The boys hear singing. Apparently, the siren has finally had enough to eat.
