Ozonna released Believe It To See It last spring. Despite some interesting qualities, it suffers from formulaic and lackluster performances.
Ozonna released his EP titled Believe It To See It on March 17. The London-based indie artist has an interesting quality to his voice and occasionally hits on something catchy. However, most songs on this tech-infused pop record feel formulaic and lackluster.
Believe It To See It opens with “We Glow.” A cookie-cutter track, it is neither repellent nor inspiring. The artist squeezes more syllables into some verses than comfortably fit within the rhythm. Unfortunately, rather than successfully diversifying the dynamics of “We Glow,” the technique comes across as awkward. Without a driving ebb, flow or build, the music lacks emotion. Consequently, Believe It To See It opens in an unexceptional manner.
“Wonderland” is the second track on Believe It To See It. The intro has an interesting Moby-esque quality. Rather than building upon this sensibility though, “Wonderland” quickly subdues it – failing to reach a pinnacle. Conversely, the next track does produce a musical climax. Entitled “Corrupt Mind,” track three has the makings of a catchy tune. The lyrics reflect the title in subject matter. However, Ozonna’s performance lacks the intentionality expected in such words.
Next on Believe It To See It is the title track. With danceable rhythms and a techno backdrop, this song may snag a spot on party playlists. However, there is not enough variation in tone or drive in rhythm to imagine “Believe It To See It” in large clubs. The final track, “Smile,” contains more lyric themes of misbehaving. Once again, these sensibilities do not make it into Ozonna’s vocal quality. Ending on a moderate note, “Smile” struggles to retain the listener's attention.
Ozonna has produced a middle of the road record with Believe It To See It. Though containing some positive ingredients, the final product lacks the musical dynamics and engaging performances needed to launch it into the foreground.
