J. Alan Schneider released his debut EP, Lo & Behold, on July 22. This New York City-based artist creates folk-inspired, moody and lyrical music.
Lo & Behold opens with “Lo.” Reminiscent of Sigur Ros, this track has an airy and ephemeral quality. It is interesting for someone billed as "folk" to begin in this borderline ambient way. Hypnotic vocals and trickling strings overlay just enough alternate instrumentation to keep things moving.
Second on Lo & Behold is “Behold.” This song creates an easy bridge from track one with breathy vocals and gentle instrumentation. Appealingly, however, Schneider’s string work gathers intensity throughout the piece. Though the artist’s music is folk-driven, “Behold” solidifies a sense of that is an oversimplification.
“Whiskey” follows, immediately bringing the tempo up a notch and getting listener’s toes tapping. However, Schneider’s voice remains calm and smooth – with something sorrowful throughout. Interestingly, “Whiskey” almost feels like the pared-down acoustic version of a full-blown rock track.
Fourth on Lo & Behold is a song called “Brace Yourself” – a beautiful standout on the album. “Brace Yourself” highlights Schneider’s technical guitar abilities while weaving a lovely tune. With a soundtrack feel, it evokes images of greyhound bus rides in the rain.
An ongoing mood
The remaining three tracks on Schneider’s debut EP are strong. At some point though listeners desire a change of pace. That is not to suggest the artist should stray from his tonal or stylistic inclinations. However, the now familiar combination of breathy somber vocals, fast and light guitar and minimal ambient background instrumentation begins to blend together. It would be interesting to hear a version of Lo & Behold tweaked to further accentuate unique aspects of each track.
Lo & Behold is a solid first EP from J. Alan Schneider. Listeners will look forward to future projects from the emerging artist.
