A busy weekend with four new releases saw Tyler Perry’s Boo! A Madea Halloween take the top spot after grossing $27.6 million.
The opening is the largest three-day weekend opening in about two months reports Box Office Mojo. It is also the largest opening for a Madea film since 2009’s Madea Goes to Jail.
Second place goes to Tom Cruise’s sequel Jack Reacher: Never Go Back which brought in $23 million. This is an improvement over the $15.2 million debut that Jack Reacher had back in 2012. Third place belongs to another sequel, Ouija: Origin of Evil which grossed $14.1 million. In 2014, Ouija brought in $14 million during its opening weekend so the sequel kept pace with the original.
The Accountant slipped to fourth during its second weekend with a 43 percent drop and brought in $14 million. It is closing in on $50 million domestically and I still predict it will hit $100 million domestically. The Girl on the Train rounds out the top five with $7.3 million and is just under $60 million domestically after 17 days.
The highest grossing film in the top 10 Miss Peregrine, came in sixth place with $6 million and is close to passing $75 million domestically. The other new release Keeping Up with the Joneses fell flat with a disappointing $5.6 opening. I don’t see this film staying in the top 10 after this week.
Madea will have some tough competition next weekend as the third film in The Da Vinci Code franchise, Inferno will open in 3,400 theaters. I predict that film will take the top spot at the box office.
