Last night, Jane The Virgin returned as we learned Michael’s fate after being shot in the season 2 finale. In the beginning, we see young Jane as she argues with an author over her romance novel ending in tragedy. This is the reason she now reads the ending of a book to prepare herself.

Flash forward to the present and Jane goes to find Michael, who has not returned to their room. As she turns the corner, she is horrified to find her new husband has been shot. Calling for help, Jane holds Michael in her arms and pleads with him to stay with her.
In the hospital, Jane and her family wait for word on Michael’s condition. Flash backs show Jane and Michael after their first meeting when Jane was trying to decide between going out with the cop she just met or her crush, Sam.
However, Michael, who had been told Jane was sick, saw her going out with Sam when he was coming to bring her soup. He pulls Sam over for an illegal U-turn and gives Jane a hard time for lying to him.
Back in the present, a nurse lets Jane know her husband is in critical condition. She hands Jane Michael’s ring for safe keeping. Michael’s mom arrives and immediately takes over asking questions.
At the hotel, a cop questions Rafael about his whereabouts. He tells them he was with his ex-wife, Petra. Technically, he was actually with Anezka. In “Petra’s” room, Anezka speaks to Magda over the phone and they discuss, while using code, injecting Petra to make sure she stays paralyzed. She has to be given the drug in six hours.
A cop comes to let “Petra” know her alibi checked out and that he needs her help going through security footage. “Petra” realizes they have to go through ten different surveillance cameras for an hour each. She wants to go back to the hospital to supposedly check on her sister, but the cop tells her they need to work on this.
Jane attempts to do some paperwork, but Michael’s mom once again takes over, saying she knows Michael’s history more. Rogelio spots two fans taking a photo of him and he rushes to put a stop to it. He does not want another story about Jane getting out because of him like when Mateo was kidnapped.
When Michael’s mom makes a comment about her eating, Xiomara starts to defend her daughter. Jane pulls her away and begs Xo to just cool off, not wanting to start anything when they are here for Michael.
In a flashback, Jane is eating the soup Michael made and also looking at his Facebook page. She goes to see Michael so they can try dating again. However, he becomes annoyed finding out that she is still trying to see where things go with Sam.
Back to the present, after Xo walks away, Jane rushes to another floor of the hospital and starts sobbing uncontrollably due to the fear and stress.
While Jane cries, in a room nearby, a doctor checks on “Anezka,” and puts a call button near her fingers. Meanwhile, “Petra” really wants to get to the hospital so she tries to escape from the cops, who are suspicious of her actions.
Rogelio talks to Xo about the two men and how he had agreed to give them urine for a urine test so they wouldn’t tweet about him. She offers to do it herself, until she remembers she is pregnant. Rogelio is stunned to find out the news.
A nurse tells Jane and Michael’s mom the bullet lodged near his spine and is causing pressure. They could wait and see what happens or do surgery to remove the fragments. Michael’s mom says no to surgery but Jane wants to discuss it. When she leaves to call Michael’s dad, a heartbroken Jane cries to Alba that she and Michael never talked about what to do. They discussed babies and other things, but not about him being shot. Alba consoles her and asks Jane what Michael would do.
As Jane thought about her husband, she remembered when Michael came over after their fight when they first met. He wanted to keep trying even though she was sure they wouldn’t work. But Michael says to her, twice, “I’m a fighter.” This memory helps Jane see that Michael would want the surgery. Her father-in-law also agrees with her.
Jane goes to see her husband and tells him he needs to survive so they can have two more children, a house, a family and the cat that Michael always wanted.
Rafael and the cops question “Petra” about her behavior. He is confused about her not remembering an important aspect of security. She brushes it off by saying everything with Michael had gotten to her. Rafael agrees to let her go to the hospital.
Jane goes back to the waiting room to see Michael’s co-workers are there to support them. A cop goes with “Petra” to visit “Anezka,” but won’t leave the room. When the nurse comes to inform Jane and everyone that Michael survived surgery, the cop watching “Petra” becomes distracted long enough to miss “Anezka’s” injection.

Jane sees her husband, who jokes that he has amnesia. She just kisses her husband and declares her love for him. Later on, they talk about the cat a nurse had told Michael about. When the detective comes in, Michael turns cold as he remembers who shot him. His partner, Susanna, was the shooter.
At the hotel, “Petra” tells Rafael she wants to bring her sister home so she can take care of her. Rafael agrees and then tells “Petra” that the night they had together only showed him he wants to be friends. Later, “Petra” calls her mother and speaks in code once more. Unfortunately, the narrator doesn’t clue us in this time so we’ll just have to wait.
Rogelio finds out the tweakers had gotten him confused with Erik Estrada and he ends up talking about the urine switch in front of a cop. Outside, Rogelio and Xo talk about the baby. Xo tells him she doesn’t want the baby and Rogelio says it is her choice. A cop takes him away and Xo says she will see him in an hour.
In security, the cops discuss powder found at the site of the shooting. It turned out to be powdered sugar, likely from a donut. A stunned Rafael realizes it had to be Sin Rostro. The cops were confused, thinking she had died. But clearly it was not the case.
