Designated Survivor

The show Designated Survivor on ABC is based on the fact that during the State of the Union address, that one person in the line of presidential succession is kept at an undisclosed location in case foul play were to destroy the entire U.S. government.

Well, after the Capital is destroyed in a likely terrorist attack, Tom Kirkman, U.S. Secretary of Housing and Urban Development, powerfully portrayed by Keifer Sutherland is immediately sworn in as the new president.

While trying to bring some order into the chaos, Tom’s family has to adapt to their new roles, and he has to manage political power plays from his staff, and alternant Republican designated survivor, Congresswoman Kimble Hookstraten (aggressively portrayed by Virginia Madsen). The show works because the American people don’t know if Tom is qualified to be president, but he is usually confident in his ability to lead.  This well-written, fast-paced drama is a welcome respite from real-life politics.
