Twitter reacts to Drew Brees agreeing to contract extension with Saints

New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees agreed to a contract extension with the team on Wednesday, Sept. 7.

According to ESPN, the deal is for five years, but has an automatic void after two years. Brees is only contractually committed to the Saints for this season and next season with the automatic void. Brees' salary for the next two seasons is $44.25 million, which is fully guaranteed. The deal has a no-trade clause and forbids the Saints from using their franchise tag on him. This is Brees' third contract with the Saints.

“I’m humbled and honored, and have been since the day I first set foot here as a New Orleans Saint. It’s been an incredible journey and I hope to continue that journey for quite a bit longer,” Brees said.

He has been with the Saints for 10 years and was entering the final year of his previous contract. He is the most successful quarterback in franchise history having won 100 games, thrown for 48,555 yards with 348 touchdowns and won a Super Bowl title in 2009. Brees is fourth in NFL history for career passing yards (60,903) and is tied with Tom Brady for third in passing touchdowns (428), USA Today noted.

Fans reacted to Brees’ contract extension via Twitter.
