Real life events are the basis of many of this week’s new films. Each story is told in its own way through different genres from horror films to musicals. Tom Hanks’ latest film provides a new perspective on a memorable 2009 event.
The little known story behind the “Miracle on the Hudson” is told in Sully. The PG-13 biopic shows the scrutiny US Airways pilot Chesley 'Sully' Sullenberger received from the media and the government despite saving all of the passengers onboard a plane during an emergency water landing. The one hour and thirty-six minute drama, based on the real 2009 event, is directed by Clint Eastwood and stars Tom Hanks, Aaron Eckhart and Laura Linney. It’s playing in conventional and IMAX theaters.
A couple, struggling to get pregnant, resorts to surrogacy in When the Bough Breaks. After a domestic dispute with her boyfriend, the soon-to-be parents take the surrogate into their home. During her stay, the young woman becomes dangerously obsessed with the husband and threatens to take the baby away. The PG-13 suspense film stars Morris Chestnut, Regina Hall and Jaz Sinclair. It plays for one hour and forty-seven minutes.
A pirate washes ashore on a tropical island filled with animals in The Wild Life. Having never come in contact with a human before, the animals learn about the new creature that has entered their home and form an unlikely bond. When a group of cats threaten to take over the island, the new friends must come together to save their land. The PG animated adventure plays for one hour and thirty minutes.
A family moves into a new home and is tormented by the ghosts of previous residents in The Disappointments Room. The limited-released thriller is based on the real events of a family that unlocked a secret room in their new residence and unleashed terror. Kate Beckinsale stars in the one hour and thirty-one minute suspense film. It’s rated R for violence, sex and language.
A poor boy longs for an expensive pair of sneakers with the hopes they make him cool and popular in Kicks. After finally saving enough money to purchase the footwear, a local thug steals them from him. With the help of his friends, the boy ventures through the dangerous inner city streets to get them back. The one hour and twenty minute action film is rated R for violence, drugs, language and sex.
Bodies found on a small town block leave neighbors devastated in London Road. The one hour and thirty-one minute musical mystery is based on the real events that took place in 2006 when a neighbor was arrested for the murders of five women, thrusting the small community in the spotlight. The unrated film is available in limited theaters.
Another real life story hits the big screen next week with the release of Joseph Gordon Levitt’s Snowden. Plus, two other popular film series’ the Blair Witch and Bridget Jones, make their way back into theaters on Sept. 16.
