Heiress to Atlas released their debut EP Sparks on July 8. The electro-pop duo creates high-energy tunes but struggles to differentiate themselves.
Heiress to Atlas is Australian singer/songwriter Vidya Sethu and New York producer/beat maker Marc Thomas. The duo began creating music as Heiress to Atlas in the summer of 2014. Over two years they performed live at various locations, but Spark marks their first EP. Each member brings talent to the table, creating club-worthy tracks. However, they struggle at times to fully distinguish themselves from other popular acts of a similar genre.
“Alien Boy” is the first track on Spark. With heavy rhythms and a catchy hook, it presents a solid opening. Listeners can imagine this song working its way into club mixes, inspiring people to dance. Though, audiences may find themselves wishing the quirky personality – showcased in the associated video – had seeped into the song proper. Despite its fun and entertaining qualities, listeners struggle to find sings of what makes Heiress to Atlas truly different from other groups in “Alien Boy.”
Second up on Spark is “Bullet.” This track is successful in much the same manner as “Alien Boy.” Sethu has a strong voice and Thomas is clearly capable of mixing danceable and engaging beats. Unfortunately, “Bullet” is likely to get lost in a sea of similar tunes already in rotation.
Saving the best for last
“Blaze” introduces an interesting sound, which shows a hint of the personality behind Heiress to Atlas. With more soulful vocals and dynamic arrangements, “Blaze” stands out from the crowd. This track is more likely to get these artists noticed. Heiress to Atlas saves the best for last on Spark, wrapping up the EP with “Well Enough.” Twinges of dupstep play under catchy melodies in this well-orchestrated tune.
Heiress to Atlas comes packaged with obvious strengths, which are evident in pieces throughout Spark. As the duo further develops their sound, listeners look forward to hearing a cohesive blend of these strong qualities – creating a more unique cocktail.
