'Empire' Season 3 will feature new music team

We've all been waiting patiently since spring for the return of Fox's popular musical drama Empire. However, one integral part of the show will not be reappearing this season.

Famed producer Timbaland, who helmed Empire's music team for the show's first two seasons, will be replaced by Rodney "Darkchild" Jerkins and Ester Dean for the upcoming third season, according to Billboard. Under Timbaland's direction,  the soundtrack for Empire's first season, which was distributed by Columbia Records, hit No.1 on the charts.

"We wanted to take a different approach for season 3. We dealt a lot with family drama in the first season through songs like ‘Good Enough’ when Lucious Lyon threw his son Jamal in the trash can. That was a very emotional music moment. So we’re going for the same success with upcoming songs like ‘Mama,’ about Cookie being the backbone of the family, and a duet with Mariah Carey and Jussie Smollett," said Shawn Holiday Senior VP of A&R for Columbia.

Pitchfork reports that the revamped music team will also include songwriters Johntá Austin (Mariah Carey), Makeba Riddick (Beyoncé and Rihanna) and Jesse St. John (Britney Spears). Ne-Yo and J.R. Rotem will be returning for the third season after working with Timbaland on season two.

Season three of Empire will premiere Sept. 21 at 9/8c.
