Unlikely characters are getting top billing with this week’s new releases. With all of the superhero movies out there, now it’s time for the supervillains to get the spotlight. The antiheroes headlining the latest Warner Brothers film include The Joker, Harley Quinn, Deadshot, Killer Croc and El Diablo.
The government enlists a group of jailed supervillains for dangerous secret missions in Suicide Squad. The notorious lethal crew is specifically chosen so if they fail they can be face of the crimes. In exchange for their participation, they’re told they will be granted leniency for their transgressions. The PG-13 action film stars Will Smith, Jared Leto, Margot Robbie, Joel Kinnaman, Viola Davis, Jai Courtney, Jay Hernandez, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Scott Eastwood, Cara Delevingne and Adam Beach. The adventure film runs for two hours and three minutes in conventional, 3D and IMAX theaters.
A wealthy workaholic dad’s life is turned upside down after visiting a pet store in Nine Lives. While trying to find a last minute gift for his daughter’s birthday, he stumbles into the shop to get her what she has always wanted and he hates, a cat. The eccentric owner sells him a magical cat and casts a spell which turns him into the feline. If he doesn’t make amends with his loved ones, he’ll be cursed to remain a tomcat for the rest of his life. Kevin Spacey, Jennifer Garner, Christopher Walken, Malina Weissman and Cheryl Hines star in the PG comedy. The live action family film plays for one hour and twenty-seven minutes.
Another live action film is hitting theaters next week, Disney’s Pete’s Dragon. The adult animated comedy Sausage Party and the Meryl Streep and Hugh Grant-led musical comedy, Florence Foster Jenkins, are also debuting on Aug. 12.
