'Splash' gets remake with Channing Tatum as the merman

Disney is set to remake the 1984 Tom Hanks and Daryl Hannah comedy Splash with 22 Jump Street stars Channing Tatum and Jillian Bell.

Splash is about a young man (Hanks) who falls in love with the mermaid (Hannah) that saved his life when he was a kid. This remake would swap the roles with Bell as the human meeting Tatum as the merman. The pitch came from Bell, according to Deadline.

Up-and-coming filmmaker Marja-Lewis Ryan is writing the script. Ryan is also writing for an HBO college-set series from Tatum's production company called Unsupervised.

The original film's director, Ron Howard and producer, Brian Grazer will produce the flick with Tatum.

Grazer made the announcement about the Splash remake back in June in an interview with CNBC. He said they were developing a remake based on an early draft of the original script that was from the point of view of the mermaid. Grazer also said "there's a movie star going to be involved."

Tatum has Kingsman: The Golden Circle coming out June 16, 2017. He then performs a heist at a NASCAR race with Daniel Craig in Steven Soderbergh's Logan Lucky.

Bell played the villain in 22 Jump Street. She has a role in Office Christmas Party coming out Dec. 9.

Splash received an Oscar nomination for Best Original Screenplay back in the day. It popularized the name Madison, uncommon before the film's release. Just ask Tom Hanks in this clip:
