U.S. Olympic swimmer Ryan Lochte was charged with falsely reporting a crime and making a false police report by Rio police on Thursday.
During the Rio Olympics Lochte claimed that he and his teammates were robbed at gunpoint in Rio. However Lochte and the other swimmer lied about being robbed to cover up a brawl they had with a security guard at a gas station. Lochte, who flew home after the incident, will testify in the U.S. and the information will be transferred to Brazil, according to Civil Police, ABC News reports.
Lochte doesn’t need to appear in Brazilian court. He does have the option of sending a lawyer to Rio. He could face one to six months in jail if convicted or the judge could levy a fine, according to CNN. Lochte would be able to appeal any decision.
Lochte has won 12 Olympic medals. He may be trading in his swimming goggles for dance shoes as he is reportedly signed on for season 23 of Dancing With the Stars.
