Robert Redford rescued abused horse during 'Pete's Dragon' filming

Robert Redford not only worked hard to film Pete’s Dragon, but he also came to the aid of a horse that appeared severely neglected.

According to the New Zealand Herald, the cast and crew would drive along a freeway to work. It was there they saw a horse “clearly abused, who was tired to this wooden fence,” actress Bryce Dallas Howard said.

She revealed that every time they saw the horse, they saw it “looked emaciated and abused.” Redford’s co-star also said they did not see any water left out for the animal.

After looking over the horse on many occasions, Redford had someone go to houses and inquire whether the horse belonged to anyone. When no one verified they were the owner, Redford worked with a rescue facility to save the horse.

Howard spoke about the rescue during a publicity appearance for the film.

In addition to rescuing a horse, Redford apparently once got lost when a helicopter pilot took him to another location instead of where they were filming.

Pete’s Dragon was just released Aug. 12.
