Just from hearing the early opening notes of the band’s debut EP, listeners will see that Silk Drop is an exhilarating band that is up for exciting things. The makeup of the group consists of Isaac Cotec a.k.a. Subaqueous, who is transforming dance floors with his grand beats and is an Ableton Live Certified Trainer, working with high schools, colleges and private institutions to help musicians reach their musical goals and vocalist Heather Christie, who recently performed on the national stage in American Idol’s final season. Her single, “Tincture,” has gained widespread support through the help of top indie electronic online label, Artist Intelligence Agency.
From Silk Drop’s debut EP, Traces, “King of Beasts” opens up in a chilling manner with Christie’s graceful singing permeating the track. The atmosphere, which is filled with unforgettable beats, fuses together electronic and some indie rock sensibilities.
“Closer” brings one closer to Christie’s unforgettably vulnerable vocals. Her velvety voice conjures up instances of jazz and nuances of soul, binding more of indie pop and rock to electronic music.
The ambiance in “Broken Mind” and “Against the Wind” creates the perfect setting to listen to music that hints at grandiose soundscapes. And with Christie’s vocals painting a poignant picture of landscapes that point towards a more innate nature, the soulful and bluesy delivery will connect listeners to a mind released of tension and one that welcomes the melding of youth and empowerment.
“Your Paradise” has a silky sound that is soothing at the same time as Christie welcomes viewers into their paradise. The track is bound by live strings that adds a symphonic element, further strengthening the electronic indie group’s music.
In the final track, “Key To Me,” there is a healthy balance of jazz, pop and electronic flow.
With so much soul in her vocals, Christie manages to project an aura filled with stage presence. Her vocals have been likened to Adele, Fiona Apple, Sia and Bjork and has been described as “elegantly soulful.” Having been professionally trained in classical and jazz choir since the age of 9, it is no wonder that jazz permeates the album. Her “elegant” vocals bridge the gap between live music and digital recordings, fusing the landscapes of the heart with soundscapes that will animate even the titans.
