Hope Solo reacts to suspension from U.S. national team

U.S. women’s soccer goalie Hope Solo reacted to being suspended from the national team last week and her reaction was caught on camera.

After the U.S. lost to Sweden in the quarterfinal match at the Rio Olympics Solo called the Sweden team “a bunch of cowards.” Sweden beat the U.S 4-3 in a shootout after the game ended in a 1-1 tie. Solo was suspended from the national team for six months last week for those comments and U.S. soccer also terminated her contract. She will be eligible to sign a new contract with the national team in February.

"For 17 years, I dedicated my life to the U.S. Women's National Team and did the job of a pro athlete the only way I knew how -- with passion, tenacity, an unrelenting commitment to be the best goalkeeper in the world, not just for my country but to elevate the sport for the next generation of female athletes," Solo said in a statement after she was suspended.

Solo is part of the Fullscreen documentary Keeping Score. The documentary shows the journey of several members of the U.S. women’s soccer team before, during, and after the Olympics. When Solo got the news that she was suspended the documentary cameras caught her reaction.

“Six-month suspension. No pay. Terminated contract, effective immediately. Terminated contract. Not just a suspension. It’s bull. … Seventeen f—— years, and it’s over,” Solo says to her husband former NFL tight end Jerramy Stevens.

On Tuesday Solo said that she won’t play again this season for her professional team the Seattle Reign of the National Women’s Soccer League, according to the New York Times. She said that she’s not there mentally as the reason for not playing again this season. Solo is the U.S’ career leader in goalie caps (202), wins (152), and shutouts (102).
