'Tomb Raider' movie starring Alicia Vikander gets release date

The Tomb Raider movie with Alicia Vikander as Lara Croft has been given a March 16, 2018 release date.

No one else is attached to the project at the time besides Vikander, who will play the archaeologist adventurer that gives Indiana Jones a run for his money.

The first Tomb Raider game was released in 1996 for the PlayStation, Sega Saturn and PC. That game has spawned seven sequels, a remake, a slew of spin-offs and a reboot that had a sequel released in November 2015. The series has shipped over 45 million copies worldwide, according to publisher Square Enix’s 2015 Annual Report.

Two films have already been made about Lara Croft. Angelina Jolie played the character in Lara Croft: Tomb Raider in 2001 and Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life in 2003. The two action films grossed over $431 million at the box office.

Warner Bros. adds another big movie to March 2018 as the studio has Steven Spielberg’s Ready Player One set for the 30th. Not only that but 20th Century Fox has a Marvel movie releasing soon and Disney is putting a Wreck-It Ralph sequel out as well.

Vikander will next be seen in Jason Bourne on July 29 and then appears opposite Michael Fassbender in The Light Between Oceans in September. She had Tulip Fever coming out next week, but The Weinstein Company pushed that film to February.
