Nicholas Winding Refn turned down 'Spectre'

Nicholas Winding Refn, director of Drive and The Neon Demon, said he turned down directing the latest James Bond film.

Refn said he favors doing projects like his upcoming spy thriller called The Avenging Silence because it allows more creative freedom.

“I just know this way I can do whatever I want, and that outweighs any money anyone can give me," Refn said in an interview with the Telegraph.

Spectre was directed by Skyfall and American Beauty director Sam Mendes. The film went on to gross over $880 million worldwide.

Refn is best known for directing Drive, the Ryan Gosling crime drama that earned raves upon its release in 2011. He's also written and directed Bronson starring Tom Hardy, Valhalla Rising with Mads Mikkelsen and Only God Forgives where he reunited with Gosling.

His latest film, The Neon Demon, stars Elle Fanning (Maleficent, Super 8), Jena Malone (The Hunger Games series, Inherent Vice), Christina Hendricks (Mad Men, Drive) and 51-year-old Keanu Reeves. The film is in limited release now. The U.K. receives the film on July 8.
