George Takei clarifies gay Sulu comments

George Takei is setting the record straight on his comments about the Star Trek character, Hikaru Sulu.

Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter earlier this month, the 79-year-old actor said that "it’s really unfortunate" that the movie franchise decided to alter Sulu’s sexual orientation to gay.

"The headlines have been misleading," Takei assured in a Facebook post on Wednesday, July 13. “"I am delighted that the Star Trek franchise has addressed this issue, which is truly one of diversity. It is thrilling to know that future generations will not see LGBTs go wholly unrepresented in the Trek universe."

Takei is not taking issue with a Star Trek character being gay, his case appears to be with the character that was selected to carry out this storyline as he feels it is not what Star Trek visionary, Gene Roddenberry wanted.

The actor initially explained to THR, “it’s a twisting of Gene’s creation, to which he put in so much thought.”
