Tyler Hoechlin cast as Superman in 'Supergirl' season two

Tyler Hoechlin is set to star as Superman in the second season of Supergirl.

The Man of Steel only appeared off-screen in the first season of the superhero show, but will appear in the first two episodes of the second season.

Melissa Benoist (Glee, Whiplash) plays the titular heroine, who is Superman's cousin on the show and in the comics.

Hoechlin played Tom Hanks' son in Road to Perdition, then went on to have a supporting role in 7th Heaven. Recently, Hoechlin had a main role on MTV's Teen Wolf and in Richard Linklater's Everybody Wants Some. Hoechlin will also appear in the two Fifty Shades of Grey sequels.

"Greg [Berlanti, co-developer of Supergirl] and I have wanted to work with Tyler for ages, so this worked out perfectly because Tyler is Superman," said Supergirl co-creator Andrew Kreisberg, "We are so thrilled and humbled to add another amazing actor to the legacy of this iconic character."

Season two of Supergirl will premiere in October 2016.
