Netflix reveals which TV genres are most binge watched

Netflix unfortunately doesn't release exact viewership data, but the company gave us a taste by revealing which TV genres are binged the hardest.

The company measured how fast people watch their shows by taking data from over 100 TV shows from almost 200 countries between October 2015 and May 2016. They looked at how quickly users get through the first season of each show, with the user having to have fully completed the first season to be counted.

The most binge-watched type of show are thrillers like Breaking Bad and Sons of Anarchy. Followed behind are horror shows such as The Walking Dead and American Horror Story, sci-fi shows like Orphan Black and The 100 and action/adventure shows Arrow and 24.

On the opposite side, "irreverent comedies," such as Arrested Development and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt are the least binge-watched type of show.

The final five genres that Netflix released data on are all different types of drama. After the "irreverent comedies," from least-binged to most, there's political dramas (House of Cards, Homeland), historical dramas (Mad Men, The Americans), superhero dramas (Daredevil, The Flash), crime dramas (Better Call Saul, Fargo) and dramatic comedies (Orange is the New Black, Weeds).

Interesting how Arrow is in the "action & adventure" category, but not in the, "superhero drama" category. Netflix released where 64 of the shows they monitored fit into which genre in the press release here.

Netflix also said people take five days, on average, to complete the first season of any show at an average of two hours and ten minutes per watching session.

According to Netflix's letter to shareholders from April 2016, the service has 81 million members around the world, 47 million of which are from America.
