Bryce Dallas Howard and Robert Redford spot a dragon in the first trailer for Disney's Pete's Dragon remake.
Howard plays a forest ranger who comes across a little boy who has been living in the woods for six years, but he hasn't been alone. The boy introduces her to his friend Elliott, a giant furry flying green dragon that hides in the forest with the kid. Karl Urban sees the dragon as a threat and gathers a group of guys to hunt it down.
The movie is based on an unpublished short story by Seton I. Miller (writer of 1932's Scarface) and S.S. Field, that was purchased by Disney. The story was intended to be used on the Wonderful World of Disney, but was handed to TV writer Malcolm Marmorstein (a frequent writer on Dark Shadows) to write into a feature film. Disney, of course, turned it into a musical, and Pete's Dragon was released in 1977 to mixed reviews. It managed to score two Academy Award nominations for Best Original Score and Best Original Song for "Candle on the Water."
The musical-less remake is directed by David Lowery (Ain't Them Bodies Saints) from a script by Lowery and Toby Hallbrooks. Disney also assigned Lowery to direct their live-action Peter Pan remake and co-write it with Hallbrooks.
Pete's Dragon will be released on August 12.
