True Detective might not return for a third season with a new project from series creator Nic Pizzolatto more likely to come to air.
On May 23, HBO's head of comedy, Casey Bloys, replaced Michael Lombardo as HBO's programming chief. Bloys decides whether to bring back the anthology series or not, and sources say that something new from Nic Pizzolatto, creator, co-executive producer and writer of both seasons of True Detective, is more likely to see the light of day, according to THR.
What Pizzolatto has in store for his next project is unknown. The only project on his slate is his co-writing credit on the remake of the remake The Magnificent Seven starring Denzel Washington and Chris Pratt.
The critically-acclaimed first season of True Detective starred Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson. The first season was nominated for four Golden Globes and won five Emmy awards from twelve nominations. Season two had Colin Farrell and Vince Vaughn as the leads. Much-less beloved, the finale to the eight episode second season saw a drop in over 400,000 viewers compared to the first second season episode. The finale to the first season saw a growth in almost 1.2 million viewers compared to the pilot.
