With all of the excitement about Hamilton being nominated for a whopping 16 Tony Awards, it may not have been immediately obvious that another brilliant talent was left off of the nominee roster---Jennifer Hudson.
Hudson, who has been playing the role of Shug Avery in the Broadway revival of The Color Purple went without a nod when the nominations were announced. Many people were up in arms about what is being called a huge snub and Hudson has her own theories about why she wasn't nominated.
According to Vulture, in a since-deleted tweet in response to a fan Hudson quipped, "My presence was used for my celebrity, not my talent. I'm not surprised."
Although Hudson didn't get the acknowledgement she may have deserved, the musical didn't totally go without nominations. In fact, The Color Purple did manage to come away with four nods for Best Revival of a Musical, Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role in a Musical (Cynthia Erivo), Best Performance by an Actress in a Featured Role in a Musical (Danielle Brooks) and Best Direction of a Musical (John Doyle).
