As one of America's quintessential superheroes, Captain America should probably be reflective of the beliefs of the American people and that is exactly what appears to be happening with the latest topic to trend on Twitter, #GiveCaptainAmericaaBoyfriend.
Following in the footsteps of the recent #GiveElsaaGirlfriend campaign, Twitter users have decided that Captain America needs a boyfriend as well. Many have stated that queer people should have a superhero to look up to and it would fly in the face of the heteronormative assumption that everyone is straight.

Steve Rogers fought 117 nations & gave up the shield for Bucky. If that's not love, I don't know what love is #GiveCaptainAmericaABoyfriend

#GiveCaptainAmericaABoyfriend because somehow a guy dating another guy is weirder than a guy dating his dead girlfriend's niece

There are detractors, however, and the hashtag has spawned numerous counterarguments against having Captain America become a gay character. Many tweets have pointed out that Captain America has not been established as a gay character within the canon of the films or comics and his being gay would undermine his established relationship with Margaret "Peggy" Carter, who was played by Hayley Atwell in the films.
We can't #GiveCaptainAmericaABoyfriend if he's not gay.

#GiveCaptainAmericaABoyfriend wouldn't randomly changing someone's sexuality be tacit admission that conversion therapy is legit?

it is now "TRENDY" to say #GiveCaptainAmericaABoyfriend but totally ignore all the canonically gay superheroes. it's homophobic.
