Toronto Blue Jays right fielder Jose Bautista got into a brawl with Texas Rangers second baseman Rougned Odor during Sunday’s game.
The fight occurred during the eighth inning of Sunday’s game. Bautista got on base after being hit by a pitch from Matt Bush and later made a hard slide into second base at Odor’s legs during a double play. Odor then shoved and punched Bautista in the face, ESPN noted. Both teams cleared the benches and joined the melee. Bautista, Odor, Blue Jays third baseman Josh Donaldson and Rangers bench coach Steve Buechele were ejected after the brawl.
"I was pretty surprised," Bautista said. "I mean, obviously, that's the only reason that he got me, and he got me pretty good, so I have to give him that. It takes a little bit bigger man to knock me down. I had a hard slide at second base. I could have injured [Odor, but] I chose not to. I tried to send a message that I didn't appreciate getting hit [by the pitch]."
Blue Jays manager John Gibbons called the fight ugly, unfortunate and gutless. It took the umpires about 10 minutes to restore order and when the game resumed Blue Jays reliever Jesse Chavez hit Prince Fielder with a pitch. Both teams left their dugouts again, but no fight occurred.
Bautista is hitting .217 and has six homeruns and 25 RBIs, according to MLB.com.
The Rangers won the game 7-6. They are 22-16 and in first place in the AL West. The Blue Jays are 19-20 and in third place in the AL East.
