“Antonia Barclay and her Scottish Claymore” by Jane Carter Barrett is a fun romantic comedy packed with action. The novel tells the story of Antonia Barclay and her quest to find her real mother, Mary Queen of Scotts. This fast-paced novel and heroine keep the reader on their toes.
This novel is historical fiction, but not in the traditional sense. It takes place in 1586, but has countless anachronisms. The character talk and act like they are in an early 19th century Jane Austen novel, reference modern clothing designers and even reference the 1987 cult classic movie The Princess Bride. However, Barrett asks the reader to understand that the mistimings were created in fun and jest. She asks that readers look past the anachronisms in a letter to the reader at the beginning of the book. I advise any future readers of the book to do so to further their enjoyment.
This novel is a fantastic read for anyone looking for a fun, adventurous, entertaining, rom-com story. It's a perfect vacation book that will help the reader escape from their world.
Released in February 2016, “Antonia Barclay and Her Scottish Claymore” is available on Amazon.com.
