Abby Wambach joins ESPN as analyst

U.S. women’s soccer champion Abby Wambach is joining ESPN as an analyst and a contributor, the network announced on Wednesday.

Wambach has agreed to a multi-year contract with ESPN. She will cover the UEFA European Football Championship in France and the Olympics in Rio this summer. She will also contribute to ESPN Films projects and reports on E:60 and Outside the Lines, according to the network. In addition to that gig, the athlete will be launching a bi-weekly ESPN audio podcast called Fearless with Abby Wambach later this month.

"My soccer career has provided me with a lot of different experiences that brings more than Xs and Os to the table," Wambach said, "I'm excited to join ESPN and to have the opportunity to tell stories that transcend soccer."

Last October, Wambach retired from soccer after a 15-year career. She is the leading scorer in international soccer with 184 goals. She won gold medals at the 2004 and 2012 Olympics and won a World Cup title last year. In 2011, she won the ESPY for Best Play of the Year and was named AP Athlete of the Year. She was then named the FIFA Player of the Year in 2012 and was the U.S. Soccer Athlete of the Year in 2003, 2004, 2007, 2010, 2011 and 2013.

Wambach was arrested for driving under the influence last month. She posted an apology on Facebook, plead guilty and entered a diversion program for first-time offenders.
