5. Steel Magnolias
From director Herbert Ross (Footloose) comes this dramedy about a group of women living in a tight-knit Louisiana community. Sally Field plays M'Lynn Eatenton, a woman preparing for the wedding of her daughter Shelby (Julia Roberts). Though she was told she should not have children due to her diabetes, Shelby becomes pregnant a few months after the wedding, forcing M'Lynn to become tremendously worried about her daughter's future. The rest of the cast is fleshed out by Dolly Parton, Olympia Dukakis, Shirley MacLaine and Daryl Hannah as Annelle, a young girl working at the beauty parlor that brings all of these characters together. For mothers of recently-wed daughters, this one will surely hit close to home.
