2. Mermaids
Mermaids introduces audiences to 15-year-old Charlotte Flax (Winona Ryder), a young girl being raised by her strange, lively single mother, Rachel (Cher), with whom she has very little in common. But their lives cross paths in an unexpected way when, upon moving to a new town, they both fall in love with the same man. It may sound like a bizarre setup, but at its core, Mermaids is a charming little movie about the relationship between a single mother and her daughter. Be warned, though: the title is just a metaphor. It has nothing to do with mermaids.
