MLB pays tribute to Jackie Robinson on Jackie Robinson Day

Major League Baseball is celebrating and honoring Jackie Robinson today, on the day he made his major league debut.

Robinson made his debut on April 15, 1947 and broke baseball’s color barrier. This year marks the 69th anniversary of that debut and every player is wearing the number 42 jersey  in honor of him. Yasiel Puig, CC Sabathia, Robinson Cano, Chris Archer, David Price and Curtis Granderson are among the many players that have paid tribute to Robinson on social media.

Robinson signed with the Dodgers, who were in Brooklyn at the time, in 1945 and went on to play in the majors for 10 years. He was the National League Rookie of the Year in 1947, the NL MVP, won the batting championship in 1949, had a career batting average of .311 and made six All-Star teams, according to MLB.com. He died in 1972 and is a member of the Hall of Fame.

MLB has pledged to increase its financial commitment to the Jackie Robinson Foundation in honor of the baseball great.
