Lit-Cube is a subscription box service for older teens and adult women that mails books and bookish goodies each month. Sometimes the books are Young Adult and sometimes older. They include things like t-shirts, socks, jewelry, bookmarks and pins for literary folk. They’ve done classics, time travel, fairy tales and other themes. It’s truly a club for the young at heart without catering explicitly to teens.
This month the Lit-Cube box theme was “Anniversary of the Dragon.” April was Lit-Cube’s one-year anniversary and their mascot is a purple book-guarding dragon named Stacks. I’ll give you an idea of what to expect in their monthly package and the approximate overall value.
At the top of this article, you’ll see the box the items were shipped in. It’s attractive and creative with their dragon logo front and center. Everything inside was padded in shredded cardboard and arrived safe and sound.
The first item I pulled out of the box was Stacks the book-drunk dragon! Stacks is a limited edition plush. He’s soft and spotted with purple foam feet and big googly eyes. It’s love at first sight here. I’ve always adored dragons and he’s so stinking cute. Lit-Cube lists his value at $11.99.
Okay, I have to admit I was a bit confused as to why this next item was in the dragon box. It’s a bag of Fat Man’s Beef Jerky. I’m hard to please when it comes to jerky. Many brands taste too full of chemicals to me. I must admit that this was the best I’ve ever eaten. It tasted like real beef, not chemicals, and was made with ingredients I could pronounce. So, it doesn’t fit the theme. Hard to mind when it’s this tasty. Not to mention there’s a 10 percent off coupon for ordering more. The value of the bag of jerky is listed as $2.99.
Next in the package was this eye-catching faux leather dragon bracelet. There are three charms tied into it. One dragon, one arrow and one infinity symbol. The faux leather is braided and knotted and the bracelet hooks with a brass lobster clasp and chain. This type of clasp is nice because it fits a variety of sized wrists. It looks fairly sturdy and is valued at $8.95.
Next, the box contained a coloring journal and a pack of colored pencils with a sharpener built into the lid. Again, at a loss as to why this was in the dragon box, but it’s a beautiful item. The pages are lined to use as a diary or to take notes for school, and every few pages there’s a picture to color. The drawings are adorable. There’s no way I wouldn’t use this, so again – doesn’t fit the theme, but too nice an item to mind. The pencils are the perfect size for travel and the sharpener is a nice touch. The value of the book is $9.99 and $6.99 for the pencil set.
Last in the package is this month’s book and collectible card. They give out a card in every box that you can collect to remember the fun. The book this time is Slayers, by C.J. Hill, which was first published in 2011. It’s the paperback copy and the art on the front is stunning. It’s the story of modern-day teens descended from dragon-slaying knights who have to keep ancient dragon eggs from hatching when they’ve fallen into the wrong hands. It sounds like an exciting urban fantasy novel and I can’t wait to read it. The value of the book is $9.99.
Added up, this box has a value of over $50. Being that the club only charges $34.95 plus free shipping to the United States, that’s a great deal. Everything in this box was quality-made and usable. It’s not full of items you’ll throw in your junk drawer. The edible was tasty and the book looks like fun. This subscription is hard to beat for readers who like a little fun with the experience.
