Charlize Theron thinks 'pretty people' don't get the best roles

Charlize Theron has spoken out against a form of discrimination she's experienced in Hollywood, but it's not the type of discrimination you might expect.

Theron recently appeared on the cover of the May Issue of British GQ. In the cover story, the 40-year-old actress talked about embracing aging and her South African roots, but perhaps the most surprising element of the interview was when she claimed that being beautiful in Hollywood can only take you so far.

"Jobs with real gravitas go to people that are physically right for them and that’s the end of the story," the actress said. "How many roles are out there for the gorgeous, f***ing, gown-wearing eight-foot model? When meaty roles come through, I’ve been in the room and pretty people get turned away first.”

While many may be tempted to scoff at this view, upon further examination, something about Theron's statement reigns true. Think of how Theron herself was rewarded with a Best Actress Oscar for drastically downplaying her features to look like a serial killer in Monster (2003). Anne Hathaway also won an Oscar for shaving her head to resemble a poor prostitute in Les Miserables (2012) and, most recently, Jennifer Aniston was nominated for a Golden Globe for going makeup-free and facially scarred in Cake (2014).

Theron will next appear in The Huntsman: Winter's War, which, as we previously reported, will be released on April 22.
