There is a new Lara Croft in town and her name is Alicia Vikander.
The 27-year-old Swedish actress will be starring in a reboot of the Tomb Raider movie series based on the video game of the same name. This film will deal with a young Lara Croft trying to survive her first adventure.
Alicia Vikander already has an Oscar under her belt for her role in Danish Girl, so it should be no challenge for her to step into the shoes previously filled by another Oscar-winner, Angelina Jolie.
Jolie played Lara Croft in two films: 2001's Lara Croft: Tomb Raider and 2003's Lara Croft: Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life. While neither film was a hit with critics, according to Sky News, the films both became box office smash hits.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the film will be co-produced by MGM and Warner Brothers, with the rights acquired from GK Films. THR reports that Vikander hopes the film will have franchise potential for her as well, since she has already proven herself as a powerhouse in the drama genre.
Coming up this year, Vikander will be seen in the Jason Bourne film, and will star opposite Michael Fassbender (Assassin’s Creed) in The Light Between Oceans.
