Spike Lee visits Questlove's New York University class

For the students of New York University, celebrity citings aren’t exactly uncommon.

Such is especially likely to be the case if your professor is a celebrity, and invites other famous pals to be guest lecturers in your class. This is just what happened for several lucky students of a course taught by The Roots’ drummer Questlove, who recently invited director Spike Lee to his class

Questlove's co-professor Harry Weinger, who also serves as Vice President of A&R for Universal Music Enterprises, captured the special occasion in an Instagram post guaranteed to make jealous even those students who were not already sour about not getting a place in the course. He described how Lee's work fits into the curriculum of the class, which NYULocal reported back in 2012, when the class first started, was titled "Classic Albums."

Of the bajillion jobs: I love TEACHING. 1st day back at #NYU was quite awesome #Repost @harryweinger ・・・ Here's how @questlove & I kicked off class no. 1 @nyuniversity - we're teaching the evolution of @michaeljackson from @classicmotownofficial @classic_motown to #gambleandhuff to #thewiz to #Off TheWall to #Thriller and there's no better way to tell it than @officialspikelee documentary... And so hey why not, Spike came to intro film and do a Q&A after, for our students + 100 lucky guests. And oh yeah @djspinna played rare gems as a soundtrack for our talkback. @jeffrabhan & Dean Allyson Green from the team @nyutisch @clivedavisinst hung with us too. Thanks to all who participated and make this work, a "100" afternoon. Props to @nikkimirasola @djbrainchild @a_paprika

Lee's class visit comes at what some might consider to be a trying time for the musician. As we reported, earlier this month Questlove's father and fellow musician Lee Andrews, who founded Lee Andrews and The Hearts, passed away. He shared an emotional tribute to his late father in another Instagram post.

The Greatest Teacher in my life, my dad Lee Andrews June 2nd 1936-March 16 2016. I love you. For every backstage experience. For every drum lesson. For giving me your tireless work ethic. For our father & son record binging expeditions. For our arguments over the summer I discovered #ItTakesANationOfMillions. For the look on your face when I told you "imma give this rap thing a try" (I waited til our 2nd album to have this convo btw) For the look on your face 5 years later when I told you "you don't have to work no more. For the look on your face when a year later I was like "Seriously dad, you don't have to work anymore!" For bringing my mom & my sister into my life. For the years we fell out. For the years we put it back together. But really, for the last 2 conversations we had. I understand why you were so hard on me praying I didn't succumb to a fate not meant for a teenager in west philly in the mid 80s. I didn't understand it at the time. But I appreciate it now. I hope Donn & I do you proud. #LeeAndrewsAndTheHearts
