New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton announced on Wednesday that he has agreed to a contract extension with the team.
The contract hasn’t been signed yet, but Payton said that he will sign it soon. The extension is for five years and is worth more than $45 million, according to ESPN. Payton is now signed through the 2020 season. He had two years left on his current contract, which paid him $8.5 million, making him one of the highest-paid coaches in the NFL.
"There's so much of you in there, that I don't see myself working anywhere else," Payton said. "There's been really good stability and consistency at ownership. We just had dinner with Mr. B. last night, Mickey, and I think that doesn't guarantee anything, but it gives you a chance. It's been very functional. That stability, obviously, I don't take for granted."
Payton became the Saints coach in 2006. It is the only team that he has coached in the NFL. He is 87-57 in the regular season and 10-6 in the playoffs and led the Saints to their first Super Bowl title in the 2009-10 season, Fox Sports noted. His overall record does not include the 2012 season when he was suspended for Bountygate. He is the third longest-tenured coach in the league, tied with Mike McCarthy of the Green Bay Packers and behind Bill Belichick of the New England Patriots and Marvin Lewis of the Cincinnati Bengals.
The Saints are currently in negotiations with quarterback Drew Brees, who has one year left on his contract, for a four-year contract extension. They were 7-9 for the second straight year last season.
