Prince announces new memoir with Random House

Legendary singer/songwriter Prince has announced the release of his new memoir.

Prince, 57,  made the announcement at Manhattan's Avenue Club Friday, asking the crowd, "Y'all still read books, right?" He then told them that Spiegel & Grau, an offset of Random House, acquired the rights to his memoir, which is currently under the working title The Beautiful Ones, after a song off of his 1984 smash Purple Rain, according to NPR.

Prince said "Brother Dan," who according to The Wall Street Journal is actually Dan Piepenbring, an editor at The Paris Review, would be helping him write the book.

The memoir will reportedly recount Prince's first memories all the way to his performance at the Super Bowl in 2007. NPR reports that after making the announcement, Prince gave a special performance spinning and remixing his own songs behind a DJ table.

Memoirs by music legends have seen an uptick in popularity due in part to baby boomers wanting to read about their favorite acts. Books by Keith Richards, Bob Dylan and Patti Smith have all sold close to or more than half a million copies, according to WSJ. Bruce Springsteen will also be releasing an autobiography, titled Born to Run, in September. The star's memoir is slated for a 2017 release.
