Peyton Manning officially calls it a career after 18 years

The Denver Broncos held a press conference on Monday in which Peyton Manning officially announced his retirement from the NFL.

The timing of the announcement did not come as a surprise after reports surfaced a day earlier of Manning’s intentions.

“The Sheriff,” as he’s known in the league, began his career in 1998 with the Indianapolis Colts and signed with the Denver Broncos in 2012. He won a Super Bowl with both teams; a feat no other quarterback in NFL history has accomplished. He is a 14-time Pro Bowler and a five-time NFL MVP. His career numbers speak for themselves and his impact on the game itself is undeniable.

While fighting back tears Manning said, "I revere football ... so if you wonder if I'll miss football, absolutely I will." The feeling is mutual as the league and his fans will also miss him playing on Sundays.

What the 39-year-old decides to do post-football is not yet known, but what is certain is that his name will one day be called in Canton, Ohio.
