'Peaky Blinders' star Annabelle Wallis joins Tom Cruise in 'The Mummy'

Universal's upcoming Mummy reboot has just found its female lead.

According to Variety, Annabelle Wallis will star opposite Tom Cruise in The Mummy, playing an archaeologist. Wallis is primarily known for her role as Grace Burgess on the BBC drama Peaky Blinders. She is no stranger to horror, though, having also lead the Conjuring spinoff Annabelle.

The Mummy will kick off Universal's new universe of monster movies, a series of Marvel-style connected films that will eventually lead into crossover events. Alex Kurtzman, who is overseeing the film universe, will direct The Mummy. The screenplay is written by Jon Spaihts (Prometheus).

We don't know a whole lot about The Mummy just yet, but unlike the previous trilogy of Brendan Fraser films, this one will be set in modern times. It will also feature a female mummy, with Sofia Boutella (Kingsman: The Secret Service) on board as the titular villain, as we previously reported. Tom Cruise will play the male lead, but it has not yet been revealed who that character is.

We'll have to wait a bit longer to find out, unfortunately, as The Mummy was recently delayed from March to June of next year, as we previously reported. It will now open on June 9, 2017.
