'My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2' grosses $18.1 million for opening weekend

My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2, the follow up to 2002's smash hit My Big Fat Greek Wedding opened this weekend grossing a little over $18 million.

According to Cinemablend, the film came in third behind Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice and Zootopia. It grossed $18.1 million-- just enough to qualify it as a box office success against an $18 million budget. But the film did not live up to the critical success of its predecessor, which also happens to be the highest selling romantic comedy of all time in the U.S., according to Box Office Mojo.

The New York Times called the sequel "embarrassingly awful," and unimaginative, sarcastically remarking that the someone should have sprayed some Windex on the film's screenplay, referring to the patriarch of the Portokalos family, and his belief that Windex could cure anything.

Entertainment Weekly was also not fond of  the film, giving it a C- and calling it "overly broad and ultimately unfunny."

My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 also currently has a 24 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes according to The Wrap. But Universal's distribution chief, Nick Carpou still spoke fondly of the film saying, "This movie was made for people. Everybody comes from a family, and that lets them relate to these terrific characters created by Nia. I like to see people happy."
